The Crannog Project Excavation at Loch Achility
Added on 12 March 2025
NOSAS's Crannog Project has investigated several sites recently - Loch Achilty and Loch Kinellan amongst them - and in September 23 members were busy on the Isle of Tiree. Read the most recent blog here.
Two timbers recovered from the Loch Achility crannog by NOSAS have recently been dated to the Medieval period, c. 1046-1221 and 1323-1421 CE.
In partnership with the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS), and with guidance from Michael Stratigos of Aberdeen University, an underwater excavation is being planned for September 2025. We will be looking to establish how the crannog was built, whether there is evidence of occupation, and whether we can obtain additional datable material to give us a full chronology of the site. It is also hoped to carry out sonar imaging to obtain a 3-D model of the crannog. Funding has been obtained from The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and from SSE Renewables, to allow the project to proceed, with volunteers from both NOSAS and NAS carrying out much of the work.
